There are many differences between these two types of investments, and it's important to learn the basics before investing in stocks and bonds.

Stocks

Investing in stocks means that you gain part ownership in a company. This unit of ownership is called a share, and all shares for that company will have a common price.

Companies sell stocks to raise money for their business to grow. Although both public and private companies sell shares, it's more common that you'll invest in a public company. This is because private companies are only available to a limited number of investors.

When you invest in dividend stocks, the company will make regular cash payouts of their profits to the shareholders (i.e. investors). Although this is only one type of stock type, our investment expert Dan Fournier argues that "good quality dividend stocks are underrated and should be considered a serious contender for inclusion in any investment portfolio."

Bonds

Investing in stocks and bonds are quite different from each other. Simply put, a bond is a loan that you, the investor, are giving to a borrower. This is unlike a stock because you're not gaining part ownership in that company.

Common borrowers include governments or businesses. Similar to a stock, the borrower uses your investment to help finance their activities.

Bonds are profitable because, for the most part, they provide steady interest payments at a given rate (coupon rate). And once the bond expires, the borrower will pay back the initial investment (principal) to the investor.
